Sonya Nagels - teacher

Sonya Nagels is a New Zealand artist with Dutch ancestry. After selling everything she owned she packed her bags in December last year and spent 9 months travelling in South East Asia, Morocco and Western Europe. She now currently resides in Amsterdam. She has also lived in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Sonya studied Fine Art and Commercial Photography in New Zealand and graduated in 2000. Since then she has been working as a Freelance Photographer and as a Photographic Printer. Her freelance work mostly revolves around Portraiture and Band Photography. She has recently completed a documentary project following a New Zealand band on their tour through France, Germany and Poland. Sonya’s personal photographic practice moves between candid intimate portraits and more structured series. Key themes in her work are time and displacement, possibly due to the amount of time she spends moving around the globe. Much of her work is shot at night or at dusk. She has exhibited her work in New Zealand and Australia.
